Mokracy: MUSIC

Another Day

(Mokracy)
July 7, 2010
Words by Darrin Hensley, Music by Paul Felice
This was a song put together years ago, I think around 2003. At the time, I, Darrin Hensley, Sean Smith and Adam Price were attempting to assemble a band, and I think we were called Mr. Nemo and then that stupid fish movie came out. I can't remember what we ended up being called; went through several names.

Anyway, the lyrics were provided by Darrin, and we converted them into this kinda pop-sounding folksie song that never set well with me. I mean I liked it at first, but it just got more and more annoying as time went by. The band broke up before our first gig anyway, and so it's just been sitting around for like the last 7 years.

Then the other day I was listening to the soundtrack from Garden State and decided I really wanted to do something fingerstyle with a shuffle beat, and for some reason I thought of "Another Day" and decided to rework it into a completely different style. I liked it, but had kept it in the key of G and played it at capo 5, which sounded kinda cool.

Later, I was chilling at Doo Wop waiting for a student and heard Justin playing an acoustic that, at first, I thought was in some open tuning. I stole it from him a realized that it was in standard tuning but tuned down to C#(ish). I played the little diddy from my rework and loved it, so that's what you hear in the recording.
Another Day

One guitar and a microphone
One brave man, he stands alone
While the spotlight draws him center stage

Spent most his life a corporate drone
Was the only life that he had known
All that got pent up inside was rage

Took orders from a faceless man
What happened to the life he planned?
Everything he thought he knew was wrong

He will change his future if he can
Level the field for every man
Put his emotion in a song

Tomorrow is another day
What happens when youth fades away?
Leaving a shell of who you were
Watching as your life passes you by
Seeing it through another's eyes
Now all your dreams are just a blur

Hopes and dreams are dead and gone
Regretting what he has not done
Trapped inside a hopeless cage

New life's ahead as he moves on
The war inside he hopes he's won
Chapter over, now he turns the page

Watch the hourglass losing sand
Justified he makes his stand
Walks on stage and sings his song

And then backstage he meets a fan
Gives her the best advice he can
Live today tomorrow's gone

Tomorrow is another day
What happens when youth fades away?
Leaving a shell of who you were
Watching as your life passes you by
Seeing it through another's eyes
Now all your dreams are just a blur

And now he's weary from the walk
Too tired now to even talk
He's traveled so many miles

On his boat tied to the dock
His gaze falls down from the clock
And he lays down and smiles

Time he always thought would last
As he slips into the past
He's face to face with death

All the time he had has passed
So many years have gone so fast
But he sings with his last breath

Tomorrow is another day
What happens when youth fades away?
Leaving a shell of who you were
Watching as your life passes you by
Seeing it through another's eyes
Now all your dreams are just a blur

Tomorrow is another day
But soon it will be yesterday
Time, it's never on your side
Everyone you’ve ever loved is lost
Can’t save yourself at any cost
Before you’ve lived you’ve already died
